Coverage will continue weekly with Austin & Jennifer Lewter at the helm as Publishers along with Jessica Edwards as Editor. The News-Record has been serving Grayson County since 1877 and is the longest standing newspaper in the county. This merger will be expanding its coverage across the county from Whitesboro to Whitewright and everything in between. Otherwise, it will be business as usual.

As Grayson County continues to grow and expand, we need a local news source we can depend on to serve us locally each week. As the Publisher of The Whitewright Sun, I am excited to share this new beginning for both newspapers, and I look forward to what the future holds. The staff of The News-Record has many years of experience in the newspaper business and will provide coverage for the City of Whitewright and all of southeast Grayson County.

The Whitewright Sun has been providing local news coverage for 142 years, and it has been my great pleasure to serve as the steward of that legacy since 2019. During the last 365 issues, I have spent nearly every week ensuring our community newspaper lived on and brought the latest news to the reader. I have attended countless city and school board meetings, community events, and covered everything from COVID 19 to the loss of local legends like Wilma McFatridge and O.C. Smith.

Throughout this time, I have seen our lovely little town change and grow while staying the same small town we all love, and I have experienced a lot of personal growth. The most valuable thing I will take away from this experience is how identifying the problems is just the beginning; working with others, seeking better understanding, finding solutions, and implementing them is where the real work lies.

I owe more thank yous to more people than I can name in this brief article, but if you ever helped pick-up or deliver, sent pictures, shared community news for the paper, offered words of encouragement, or openly criticized my work, please know I appreciate you. I could not have done it all these years without you.

As I pass the torch to Austin & Jennifer, I am elated to know the newspaper will continue into the future, and it is my hope it will continue for another 150 years or more.

It is a bitter sweet goodbye as I leave a position I have loved over the years, yet I look forward to exploring my next chapter in life.

Thank you all for the memories, the lessons, and the privilege of serving this community. Here’s to new beginnings and the stories yet to be told.

Yours truly,

Sarah Beth Owen, Publisher

A Bright Future for News Coverage in Grayson County Beginning July 2026,The Whitewright Sun will be merging with The News-Record.
